The NWS Storm Prediction Center has issued a
Severe Thunderstorm Watch for portions of
central and western Arizona
Effective this Friday afternoon and Saturday morning from 450 PM
until 200 am MST.
Hail to 2 inches in diameter... thunderstorm wind gusts to 80
mph... and dangerous lightning are possible in these areas.
The Severe Thunderstorm Watch area is approximately along and 90
statute miles north and south of a line from 60 miles south
southwest of Kingman Arizona to 75 miles east of Phoenix Arizona.
For a complete depiction of the watch see the associated watch
outline update (wous64 kwns wou3).
Remember... a Severe Thunderstorm Watch means conditions are
favorable for severe thunderstorms in and close to the watch
area. Persons in these areas should be on the lookout for
threatening weather conditions and listen for later statements
and possible warnings. Severe thunderstorms can and occasionally
do produce tornadoes.
Discussion... another round of strong to severe storms likely to
develop west off the high terrain and move toward the lower Colorado
River valley tonight. Storm intensity will be fueled by large
Reservoir of moderate instability situated across the lower
elevations while low through mid-level easterly flow aids in moving
deep convection off the higher terrain. Pockets of effective shear
in the 25-35kt range and large scale ascent associated with a subtle
short wave trough spreading nwwd from nm/nrn Mexico may allow one or
two larger convective clusters to remain organized well through the
night over parts of the region.
Aviation... a few severe thunderstorms with hail surface and aloft
to 2 inches. Extreme turbulence and surface wind gusts to 70
knots. A few cumulonimbi with maximum tops to 550. Mean storm
motion vector 07020.
