An unabated wave of severe storms is continuing its onslaught on states like Mississippi, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, Missouri and Indiana, unleashing life-threatening flash flooding, tornadoes and widespread damage.

Flash flooding is continuing and major river flooding is developing from the South into the Ohio Valley today. Severe storms could also produce tornadoes and wind damage, especially in parts of the Southeast.

The severe thunderstorm threat will finally get pushed toward the Southeast for the early part of the week ahead. Damaging wind gusts, a few tornadoes and some hail will be possible from Saturday night through Monday, when the threat should be pushed into the Atlantic. New Orleans; Birmingham and Montgomery, Alabama; Atlanta, and Charleston, South Carolina could see strong storms before we finally drop the curtain on this nasty storm sequence. Cooler weather will be on the way next week.

We've seen a relentless surge of severe thunderstorms, tornadoes and flooding rain for over a week now in the Midwest and South. Fortunately, there's light at the end of this tunnel. Here's when quieter weather will arrive and how long it may last.

Severe flash floods swept across southern Missouri, impacting cities including West Plains, Van Buren and Springfield. In West Plains, streets were overwhelmed by more than 7 inches of rainfall, leaving vehicles submerged. Van Buren saw a rare emergency alert as rescue teams responded to rising water. Flooded roads near Springfield-Branson National Airport, including Melville Road, prompted officials to urge caution and preparedness across the region.
