Weather Underground midday recap for Monday, May 12, 2008.

In the East, the dual low pressure systems that produced tornadoes and large hail in the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast on Sunday slowly moved offshore on Monday. Nevertheless, this system brought tremendous amount of rainfall across the Mid-Atlantic on Monday. Moderate to heavy rain caused areas of flooding and some places even set daily maximum rainfall records. In addition, scattered rain showers and thunderstorms continued in southern New England and eastern Ohio Valley Monday morning, and slowly tapered off in the afternoon. The system’s cold front sagged southeast and became nearly stationary in southern Florida. As a result, scattered showers and thunderstorms were ongoing all day across southern Florida.

Moving west, a low pressure system moved out of the Northern Rockies and its cold front pushed southeast through portions of the Intermountain West. This system produced mainly rain to the Northern Plains, with scattered snow showers in the Northern and Central Rockies as well as the Wasatch Range. Moreover, scattered rain showers and thunderstorms developed in the lower elevations over portions of the Intermountain West and High Plains.

For the West Coast, onshore flow kept the Pacific Northwest mostly cloudy on Monday and areas of low clouds and fog remained off the far southern California. Otherwise, mostly sunny skies prevailed across the rest of the West Coast as a ridge of high pressure began to build.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday have ranged from a morning low of 1 degrees at Port Isabel, Texas to a midday high of 102 degrees at Wink, Texas.
